What are engineering courses?

Do you love Science and Mathematics? Do you want to invent, design, build and maintain machines? The engineering courses are waiting for you! Engineers not only lead the improvement of existing machines but offers practical and long-term solutions to problems arising while dealing with machines.

Gone are the days when engineering courses just meant a couple of core functionalities. Today, its reach is so vast that one can use this as a stepping stone to achieve greater heights. Apart from the graduation, students can opt for Master’s or Doctorate degree programs to learn more in the field of engineering science.

Job Prospects at UG Level

Depending upon the area of specialisation and interest, students who have completed a B Tech program can find employment in the respective fields. However, there is always an option of pursuing master’s level engineering courses.

A graduate in mechanical engineering is eligible for job roles such as building systems engineer, tool engineer, power plant engineer, and acoustics engineer. Also, students looking for specialization in this field might consider going for thermal power engineering.

B Tech (Electronics) pass outs can aspire to work as electronics engineers, design engineers, applications engineers, system integration engineers, network engineers, and system analysts. Also, candidates with a B Tech degree in electrical engineering are considered suitable to work as the design engineer, test engineer, electrical engineer, process manufacturing engineer, quality control engineer, and reliability engineer.

Civil engineers can serve as the geotechnical engineer, environmental engineer, irrigation engineer, construction engineers, or transportation engineer.

Computer engineering can open doors to some key posts such as research and development executive, database manager, information security officer, software developer, programming specialist, software manager and data research analyst.

Aerospace engineers can apply to work with institutions like ISRO and the Defence department. They can also work with commercial airlines, Helicopter Corporation of India, or the Civil Aviation department in the capacity of junior engineer, assistant technical officer, or aeronautical engineer.

Chemical engineers can serve numerous industries, including but not limited to design and construction, food processing, microelectronics, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, biotechnology, and environmental health.

Nuclear engineering degree holders can find employment in the radiology, and research and development departments of companies that specialize in radioactive materials and related activities. Their job responsibilities might include dealing with medical equipment, and researching and writing operational instructions to be used in a nuclear plant, or in handling and disposing of nuclear waste.

Agricultural engineers can easily serve the agriculture and food industries. Also, they can work as technical engineers who can automate farming processes, or as scientists in labs that are engaged in agricultural and dairy-related activities.

Job Prospects at PG Level

With a Master’s degree under their belt, students are poised to interview for better and higher positions at top companies. For those interested in research and development, a PhD program might be more suitable. They can also opt to work for companies that have an R&D department to develop new products or work on existing technologies. Also, Master’s degree holders can go for teaching engineering student at the undergraduate level.

Skill Sets Required

A candidate who decides to pursue engineering courses must possess the following:

  • Effective communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Technical knowledge
  • Organizational skills
  • Enthusiasm
  • Commitment
  • Time management skills
  • Problem solving

Remember, if you have a keen interest in how things work, engineering is just the one for you.

Admission Procedure & Exams

At the Undergraduate Level

Eligibility Criteria

For getting admission to various Bachelor’s level engineering courses, grade 12 students whose result is awaited or 10+2 pass outs with a minimum of 50 percent aggregate can appear for common entrance exams. Thereafter, a merit list is created wherein your ranking determines your eligibility.

Admission Process

Candidates can claim a seat in any of the engineering courses at the undergraduate level after securing a good rank in common entrance tests, which are conducted at national, state and university levels. Majorly, Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry are tested extensively in these exams.

Below mentioned are the popular entrance test exams for admission to undergraduate engineering courses:

  • Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) – This national-level exam is conducted in two phases, including Main and Advanced. Those who clear the Main exam get eligible for appearing for the Advanced level.

Several National Institutes of Technology or NITs, Indian Institutes of Information Technology or IITs, and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) across India consider JEE (Main and Advanced) scores to enrol students to various undergraduate engineering courses offered by them. Also, JEE scores are valid for admission to the Indian School of Mines (ISM).
  • Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Exam (VITEEE) VITEEE is specifically designed for students seeking admission to the undergraduate engineering courses offered by the Vellore Institute of Technology.

  • SRM Joint Engineering Entrance Exam (SRMJEEE) – For admission to undergraduate engineering courses offered by the SRM University at its various campuses, including Ramapuram, Ghaziabad, Vadapalani and Kattankulathur among others, SRMJEEE scores are considered.

At the Postgraduate Level

Eligibility Criteria

For Master’s level engineering courses, students holding a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree are eligible to apply for these courses. Students will need a good score in entrance exams, including Graduate Aptitude Testing Engineering (GATE). Those who manage to obtain a high score in the GATE exam are also eligible for certain scholarships offered by the conducting authority of the GATE exam and the Government of India.

Admission Process

Master’s level engineering courses are more specialised than undergraduate ones. Therefore, they will generally have a lesser number of seats for each area of specialisation. Also, the admission process is more rigorous. Students need to appear and score well in GATE and other entrance exams.

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)

An all India-level exam conducted by IISc and IITs jointly, GATE tests the comprehensive understanding of a variety of engineering subjects covered at the undergraduate level.
