At the diploma and certificate level:

Eligibility Criteria:

Individuals who aspire to enrol in diploma or certificate level in German language courses should have completed their pre-university or its equivalent from a recognised university. Basic certificate courses require no eligibility apart from a high school mark sheet. Advanced level certificate courses will require students to already have basic certifications. Diploma and Post diploma courses require a 10th-grade mark sheet with English. Students also need either a certificate in German (Diploma) or a Diploma in German (Post diploma).

Admission Process:

The admission procedure for the certificate and diploma in German language courses varies based on the institute offering those courses. The qualifying marks vary depending on the university chosen by the student. In some instances, entrance exams are conducted to gauge eligibility. For the final selection, the shortlisted candidates will have to clear a personal interview after the entrance exam.

Job Prospects:

Students can choose to pursue a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree after finishing certificate or diploma programs. If they choose to work, they can find employment as translators with private or government organisations. They can also work as German teachers.

-          Minimal knowledge of German grammar to understand the language better.

At the Undergraduate Level:

Eligibility Criteria:

The minimum qualification required for enrolling into undergraduate German language courses, including BA in German, is grade 12 or its equivalent with not less than 45 percent from a recognised school board. Also, interested candidates are asked to produce their grade 12 academic transcripts.

Admission Process:

Most of the institutions offering German language courses conduct entrance examinations. A merit list is drawn up that decides who is eligible for admission.

At the Postgraduate Level:

Eligibility Criteria:

To get admission into Master’s level German language courses, a candidate should be either a German graduate or have a degree/certificate/advanced diploma in the German language from a recognised University in India. Students who have even passed B2.2 or Mittelstufe 1 obtainable by Goethe Institute (Max Mueller Bhavan) are also eligible.

Admission Process:

For enrolling in Master’s level German language courses, the admission procedure for most of the colleges in India includes an entrance examination with emphasis on the viva section.

German Language Specialization

Students enrolled in German language courses at the undergraduate level can choose to specialise in the following fields:

German Linguistics: Linguistics is studying and learning about the way different types of building blocks are combined to make up a language. Branches of linguistics include phonetics (study of the sounds of speech), phonology (study of how sounds are organized and used in German), morphology (study of words, and their formation and relationship to other words), syntax (study of how phrases, clauses and sentences are constructed and combined in German), semantics (study of meaning), sociolinguistics (study of society and language) and historical linguistics (study of how the German language has changed over time).

Cinema studies: The cinema studies specialisation is about studying the history, theory and criticism of film and television with the focus on novel forms of interactive media. Specialisation in this area under German language courses includes exploring, analysing and understanding a selection of German films so that students can develop analytical skills in artistic representations.

Media studies: This area of specialisation under German language courses potentially covers design, film, audio and multimedia knowledge. Students may focus on media representations and practices in specific relation to the German language.

Literature: Specialisation in the literature under German language courses is about gaining the in-depth knowledge of a number of literary texts written in the language.
