What is Architecture?

Architecture is a very popular course among students in India. It is a combination of planning, designing and constructing buildings and other physical structures. It is a careful study of the complex design and structure of a building. The term 'architecture' is used to describe buildings and other physical structures. 

A programme in Architecture develops a highly visual, creative, technical and design-based skill set in a candidate. It teaches the style of design and method of constructing.

At Undergraduate Level (B. Arch)

Eligibility Criteria

Those who seek admission in Bachelors of Architecture should have passed 10+2 from a recognised board/ university with Mathematics as one of the subjects with at least 50% marks in aggregate. Candidates appearing for their final examinations or awaiting their results are also eligible to apply for this course.

Admission Process

Admission to Bachelors of Architecture is possible through the scores of certain entrance examinations. These exams check the General IQ level, Aesthetic Sensitivity, Drawing ability, Quantitative Aptitude of a candidate. Scores of these examinations are taken by various colleges and universities for admission.

Examination

NATA -  NATA or National Aptitude Test in Architecture is a national level entrance examination conducted by the Council of Architecture (CoA). This exam tests applicants' aptitude in the field of Architecture. Students preparing for this examination should thoroughly practice their perspective drawing, memory skills, visualisation of 2D and 3D objects, mental and analytical abilities, architectural awareness, etc. Colleges like Sir JJ College of Architecture, Department of Architecture- IIT Roorkee, Department of Architecture, NIT Tiruchirapalli, Department of Architecture- NIT Calicut and Department of Architecture- BIT Mesra accept NATA scores for admission to B.Arch.

JEE Main -  JEE Main (Paper 2) is a national entrance exam which is one of the most popular exams in India and it is taken up by architecture aspirants. This exam is conducted for admissions to B.Arch programmes offered at NITs and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions. These examinations are designed to test the mathematical capabilities, general aptitude and drawing abilities of a candidate. Colleges like NIT Patna, BIT Mesra, SPA Bhopal, SPA New Delhi and Faculty of Architecture- Jamia Millia University accepts JEE Main scores for admission to B.Arch.

AAT (JEE Advance) -  AAT or Architecture Aptitude Test is an entrance examination given by students who desire to join Bachelors of Architecture in one of the IITs. Only candidates who have cleared JEE Main Paper 2 can appear for AAT. It is conducted only at the seven zonal IITs. Candidates preparing for AAT should brush up their Freehand drawing,  Geometrical Drawing, Three-dimensional perception, Imagination and Aesthetic sensitivity and Architectural awareness. IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee accept AAT scores for admission to their B.Arch programme.

Counselling and College Allocation

After clearing any of the above-mentioned entrance examinations, students need to register themselves for the counselling session of the particular exam. The counselling schedule will be posted on the official website of the particular examination once it is released. It is compulsory to carry original and attested copies of scorecards, mark sheets,  certificates, photograph, etc to the counselling session. Allotment of college will be done through this counselling session.

At Postgraduate Level (M. Arch)

Master of Architecture is a professional Postgraduate programme in Architecture. This programme helps candidates to move forward in this field and helps them gain a leap in their career. Candidates receive a certified license after on the completion of this programme. On the completion of this programme, one can take up any architecture project individually.

Eligibility Criteria

M. Arch Aspirants need to have a Bachelors degree in Architecture with a minimum of 50% marks in the qualifying examination. Candidates pursuing the last year of their B. Arch programme can also apply.

Admission Process

M. Arch aspirants need to improve upon their knowledge of the latest techniques and theories before appearing for any entrance examination for the same. Admission to this programme is possible

Examination

GATE (Architecture) - GATE or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. It is one of the most popular entrance examination when it comes to Postgraduate courses in Engineering. Architecture and Planning are a major part of GATE. Qualification in this exam makes a candidate eligible for admission to Master's programme in IITs, NITs and other premier institutions. Its scores are valid for three years. Several government enterprises also recruit GATE qualifiers.

State-Level Entrance Exam - Various college admits students into their M. Arch programme on the basis of their performance in their respective State level Entrance Examination. Some of these exams are Odisha JEE PGAT, APPGECET (Andhra Pradesh), Tamil Nadu CET, etc.

Counselling and College Allocation

On the clearance of the respective entrance examination, candidates are called in for a counselling session where their document verification takes place and college allocation also takes place there and then. Students should carry their original documents along with a photocopy of their documents to the counselling session.
