Sathyabama University is a pioneer institute imparting knowledge in the areas of engineering, science, technology and education. It was established in 1987 as Sathyabama Engineering College by Jeppiaar Educational Trust. The institution's progress and contribution in the field of technical education for over two decades made the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India to grant Deemed University status in 2001 and University status on in 2006 under section (3) of the UGC Act, 1956. Nationally, The university has gained an unsavory reputation, along with other institutions established by Jeppiaar for repressing social interaction between students of different genders and for a series of draconian rules.
