Placement

The Journey started on January 11th, 1965, as Technical Teachers' Training Institute (TTTI), Calcutta, set up by the then Ministry of Education, Govt. of India: the first  institute of its kind in the country.

Status: Autonomous & fully funded by the Govt. of India.

Initially started with the Departments of Civil Engg., Mechanical Engg., Electrical Engg., Science, Education and Training & Placement with a sanctioned strength of 17 members of faculty.

  • Aim: To develop Technical Education system with focus on Polytechnic Education.
  • Primary activity: Offering Long Term training to develop teachers for Polytechnics through Diploma in Technical Teaching programme of 2 ½ -years duration to Diploma holders serving in polytechnics.

1966 to 1967
  Three sister institutions established at 
  • Chandigarh for Northern Region.
  • Bhopal for Western Region.
  • Madras for Southern Region.

Kelkar Review Committee recommended introduction of Modular Taining Programme and Short Term Training Programme 

Decade of '80s
Dr. Amitabha Bhattacharya Review Committee recommended
  • Raising the status of the Institute from Regional to National level.
  • According Deemed University status.
  • Offering Long Horizon programme from Certificate to Doctoral programme with emphasis on emerging technology fields.

Decade of '90s
Professor P.V. Indiresan Review Committee recommended
  • Extension of reach of the Institute over the entire gamut of the Technical Education.
  • Emphasis on Educational Technology including Distance Education.
  • Expansion of Research Activities.
  • Integration of IT in Teacher Training.
  • According National Status to the Institute.

Decade of '70s
  • Development of Learning Resources Centre (LRC) under UNDP of UNESCO.
  • Establishment of Curriculum Development Centre (CDC) under Q.I.P. Scheme of Govt. of India.

Decade of '80s
  • Introduction of Community Polytechnic Scheme by the Govt. of India and establishment of Community Development & Rural Technology (CDRT) as nodal department.
  • Institute selected as Nodal Centre for development of modules for Continuing Education Programme (CEP) activity initiated by AICTE.

Decade of '90s
  • Establishment of Computer Science & Engineering Department.
  • Facilitating World Bank Assisted Project for Strengthening of Technician Education System in four States of Eastern Region.
  • Establishment of Educational Planning & Management Department.
  • Establishment of Extension Centers at Guwahati & Bhubaneswar for extending the reach to client states.

New Millennium

The Institute renamed as National Institute of Technical Teachers' Training & Research, Kolkata (NITTTR, Kolkata) by MHRD, Govt. of India.
