The Department of Sociology was established with Professor B.G. Mohoni as its first head. Subsequently Dr. T.N. Valunjkar, Dr. P.L. Bhandarkar, who also became the Vice-Chancellor of the University, and Dr. P.S. Bobde, in their capacity as Professor and head, provided an able stewardship for the academic excellence of the department. Over the years the department has maintained the tradition of excellence in teaching, research and personal guidance to students for career choice and development. The department has more than 2000 alumnus spread over the country and abroad, pursuing varied professional, administrative, teaching and research assignments.
