Department of Orthopaedic Surgery came into being on 17th October,1951, under Prof BN Sinha. Postgraduate courses of MS & Diploma in Orthopedics were started for the first time in the country in 1951 and 1959 respectively. A Unit of spinal cord injury was created in 1965 under supervision of Dr Susheela Verma. This was upgraded to a 50 bedded unit in 1979 - becoming the first such unit in North India. Rehabilitation and Artificial Limb Centre & Fracture Clinic were established in 1969. A Joint Care Unit was established in 1989 where total hip replacement and total knee replacement and arthoscopic surgery were started for the first time in U.P.
