This Department was inducted to the Arts Faculty of Jadavpur University. It conducted only B. Lib. and Inf. Science Course of one-year duration from 1985 onwards, the Department started a full time Masters Degree course and B. Lib & Inf. Science is offered as an evening course of 1.5 years duration.

  • Central Library has over 598594 volumes of books on record (including the Salt lake Campus Library and those loaned to Departmental Libraries), 80,000 bound volumes of journals, 13000 theses and dissertations, and 37,000 items of non-book materials such as reports pamphlets, maps and micro-forms.

Hostel

  • The university provides 13 (4 for Girls and 9 for Boys) hostels with provision for accommodating over 1500 students. Accommodation in both Women’s hostel and Boys’ hostel.

Placement

The institute has a very good reputation for providing the students better placement after studies. The institute has its own library where the students are employed as a part time basis. After passing an exam conducted by Jadavpur University of its own, the students passing the exams are employed as full time employees.
