Vaastu is the ancient Indian art of architecture. Buildings are constructed according to the principles of vaastu shastra. Its purpose is to harmonise buildings with nature. Experts examine the shape of a plot, orientation of the building etc. It’s principles are based on gravitational and magnetic force, the five elements of nature — earth, water, fire, air and space — and directions such as east, west etc.

What do they do?

Sunil Sahni established  Dream Home, a construction firm, on a 60 sq mt ground floor space at Sector 16 in Rohini, in 2006, but was troubled to see his business floundering. “We were not growing as per our expectations,” Sahni said. “Moreover, we were always under mental pressure.”

He turned to vaastu for remedy and followed the instructions of a couple of vaastu experts… but nothing worked. Then he consulted Naresh Singal, an experienced vaastu expert, who said his problems had something to do with soil (earth, one of the five elements of nature on which vaastu principles are based).
Singal suggested that two places — the centre and one corner — of the room behind the front reception be dug up. Sahni followed the instructions and “to our astonishment we stumbled upon four/five human bones”. Those were removed, the floor was fixed and  a pooja performed. Things started getting better for Sahni within two to three months.

“We started to grow. Our bottom-line grew by 30 to 40 per cent,” says a now-relieved Sahni, who works with perfect peace of mind and is “under no mental pressure”.

Rajani Agarwal is a Pitampura-based naturopath consultant and an aerobics trainer. She, along with her husband and two kids, stays in a joint family. She had, some time back, been facing problems. Her husband’s business was not doing well and her son became very unruly.  Moreover, there were regular scuffles among the inmates of the house. Fed up with all these troubles she consulted Singal after seeing a TV programme in which he participated.

Singal identified certain problems related to the way in which the house was constructed and suggested remedies for the same. There was a staircase rising anticlockwise in the north-east direction. Some vaastu experts had earlier recommended its demolition, as it was blocking a positive flow of energy. But the Agarwals were in no position to afford the reconstruction cost. Singal suggested a mirror be put up on the wall of the staircase. It was done.

Pyramids were placed on the study tables of the children. Crystals were also put up near the eastern window of the north-facing house. “There was 70 per cent improvement within three to six months of doing all these. And these also didn’t pinch our pocket,” said a satisfied Agarwal, in whose house peace has finally descended.

Vaastu, if properly followed, can indeed do miracles. “Vaastu shastra aims to make one’s home, heart and workplace more conducive to happiness and prosperity,” says Singal. To him it is an “age-old Indian science of architecture and directional alignment.” The concept of vaastu is, he says, based on gravitational forces, cosmic energy and the magnetic field of the earth. According to Vikram Mehta, a young vaastu consultant, “The purpose of vaastu shastra is to maintain a balance between man’s life and nature,” and it touches upon all facets of his/her life— career, health and income.

And the popularity of vaastu in the country is growing by the day. “A couple of years ago many people were not even aware of this art. Today, it is a different story altogether,” says Singal. However, not everyone is well-equipped to handle this art properly. “Though this is fast emerging as a lucrative career option, there are not many trained vaastu experts,” Singal adds.

It is, thus, important to remember that it takes many years of experience, hard work and patience to establish oneself in the profession.

Skills Needed

. Should have proper knowledge of vaastu shastra
. Should read scriptures and also have through knowledge of astrology and human behaviour
. Should understand nature and work out ways to connect nature to fellow humans and their dwellings
. The ability to work with different people and in different environments is a must

How do I get there?

As such there is no prerequisite qualification to pursue a course in vaastu shastra. Anyone with a genuine interest in vaastu and its ideologies can pursue a professional course at level one. Above all one must have a guru or a mentor; without a guru the chances of becoming a good vaastu expert are remote. For ages this art has survived on the guru and shishya tradition.
