A tile has moved past its utilitarian beginings and has become a decor product. Tile designing is the process of translating decor on to the ceramic medium. 

What do they do?

As a tile designer, you need to have an understanding of decor and interior designing. Flair for creativity, boring spaces into interesting interiors can go a long way in your professional growth. You need to be able to come up with great designs and must possess the know-how to translate your design on the tile. Designing and transferring the image on the surface of the tile, are important tasks for a tile designer.

How do I get there?

You can opt for any subject combination in Class 11 and Class 12, though fine art and sciences are preferable. (The Central Board of Secondary Education offers graphics design, too, to senior school students.) After that, get a degree in fine arts/design in India or do a ceramic engineering, textile engineering course in India or abroad. Many private institutes provide relevant training. Also, a good working knowledge of photoshop specific to tile designing is a must
 

Typical day in the life of a Tile Designer

Every day for a tile designer is different. As a tile designer, you perform various functions of market research, taking customer feedback and creating new designs on certain days in a week. The clockwork for each function is different. Market research can take one to different markets spread throughout the country. The feedback sessions are held frequently.   Another day or a couple of days can be dedicated to choosing the material to replicate as a tile. This material can be marble, natural fabrics, a shirt, a tie, various laminates etc. Another day can be dedicated to choosing the final designs and getting feedback on it from external and internal audiences. Once the designs have been selected, their pricing is worked out

. A very creative and challenging job . Continual updation of photoshop skills required . It is difficult to find educational courses which teach you tile designing, from making prints to transferring it on the ceramics you have to learn it yourself
