A Relationship Manager, as the term itself signifies is responsible for building, maintaining and managing relationship with a client. A Relationship Manager contributes a lot in business and also in getting new business deals for a company/organisation. He/she usually work in either retail or banking, however, a relationship manager can work in any field which deals with the customers directly like aviation, hospitality et al. The scope of his/her work would range from helping clients with their issues and advice them accordingly. A Relationship Manager in a bank may also advice a client on his/her financial investments. 

What do they do?

Relationship managers (RMs) look after the administration of a bank branch. As an RM you will also look after the direct sales associates (DSA) and direct sales team (DST). Checking files, forming DSA teams, training people, making DSAs aware of various policies of the bank, creating relationships with customers are some responsibilities that you would handle. You will have to ensure that a bank’s services are topnotch, making a customer feel safe and pampered. As an RM you have to do field as well as desk work, which gives you a taste of both the worlds. If your performance is good, then you can be promoted from the post of RM to that of a manager in two to three years. You might encounter customers who might have high expectations when it comes to service delivery and will demand quick solutions to problems. Thus, you need to have loads of patience.

How do I get there?

You can take up Maths or Commerce at class 12. A BBA degree at the graduation level will make it easy for you to handle the job. While some banks promote executives to RM, some directly recruit MBA freshers for the post of RM. However, many banks prefer taking candidates with an MBA degree only.

Typical day in the life of a Relationship Manager

9.30am: Reach office
10am: Brief DSAs and DSTs; fix targets for the day
11am: Check files (loan), check files of current and saving accounts
11.30am: Process files
12pm: Check credit investigation bureau of India limited rating
1.30pm: Lunch
2.30pm: Follow up on the credit team files
4pm - 6pm: Check files for the day, taking reports from DSAs and DSTs
6.30pm: Leave office
