Career in Blogging:

Do you like the idea of working from home? Think you can draw people’s interest through your writing and also wish to make your living out of it?

If your answer to the above questions is yes then, you can consider a career as a blogger. Blogs are no longer restricted to being a medium to express your selves online or exploring the writer in you. Now, blogs have become a vital medium of branding and communications for any brand or person. There are many products and services which try and reach out to their target audience via blogs. Even artists such as photographers and painters use blogs to communicate and showcase their work to their audience.

Who are Bloggers?

There has been a growing need for bloggers who can create and maintain a blog by adding relevant content to it. Bloggers are the ones who create a blog for themselves or they outsource their services. They make money through the advertisements on their pages, and some even do workshops, depending on what they write about. Many bloggers do it alongside a regular job when they first start, by writing in their spare time.

What do they do?

One has to regularly add new articles, and keep their regular viewers interested by publishing good content and keeping their pages visually appealing. The content may involve information about and around the brand. The idea is to post such rich, original and relevant content which reminds of the brand to the users and also engages them. This increases the trust between the consumer and the brand by increasing its recall value.

Bloggers write on a wide range of topics, from home care, to business, to video games to social issues depending on the brand’s nature and category.

Some famous bloggers include Jenny Lawson, Mark Gurman and Amit Agarwal.

How to become a Professional Blogger?

Main Pre-requisites-

  • Flair for writing,
  • Command on the language
  • Knowledge on the topic chosen for the blog posts

Other Skills Required:

  • Strong grammatical skills
  • Writing skills
  • Digital Marketing skills
  • Reading skills
  • Interpersonal /Social Networking Skills
  • Creativity

To Do:

  • The first step is to create a blog. Pick a suitable blogging website, and make your own blog. Pick the site depending how extensive the features you wish to have.
  • Whether you plan to run your own blog or freelance for someone or even become a full time blogger you need to create a blog which has a planned and unique approach.
  • Your genre of writing cannot appeal or cater to everyone at the same time. Hence, you need to find a style of writing and try to create a unique identity of yours as a blogger in that particular genre.
  • You have to be able to write things which are interesting, and which people will want to read. You need to identify what information or content people are looking for. Or, if you can be creative enough to create a need, then nothing like it! There are many people who have made careers out of their own interest, e.g. writing funny movie reviews.
  • Ideally, you should pursue this alongside another career as a fallback. The great thing is that blogging isn’t too time-consuming, so you can still balance it and the rest of your life.

As mentioned, blogging is a hassle-free and less time consuming job. Hence, you must know both sides of it.

Pros-

  • As a blogger, you are free to choose the genre, topic and even style of writing. You are free to express and present your creativity in the way you wish to.
  • There is no investment or qualification required for it. Just a good command on a particular language (English being the most common) and its grammar is needed.
  • Starting a blog is easy, and it can be pursued alongside a full-time job.
  • If you love writing and have a flair for it, then, this can give you great job satisfaction.

Cons-

  • You have to update content regularly, giving the readers, fresh, interesting things to read about.
  •  You need to research well before you write and post it on the blog. Especially, if concerns a brand, a reference or an opinion. Everything you write becomes open to questioning and even criticism.
  • This may not really work as a full-time career option if you looking for a regular and stable income.

Now, that you’ve seen the bright as well as the flip side of this career, choose to blog your away and bring out the writer’s streak in you!

Just make sure your content is interesting enough to be read and that you never have to say this:
