UGC Approved Deemed Institutes: Top 10 of The Lot

UGC Approved Deemed Universities - The University Grants Commission (UGC) is responsible for maintaining the standards of higher education in India. If an institution fulfils the criteria set by the UGC and receives the nod from the UGC, it is declared as a deemed university. The deemed universities are also ranked on certain parameters. Therefore, those who are interested in knowing the rankings and which are the top 10 deemed universities in India.

Here is a list of deemed universities approved by UGC which is based on MHRD 2020 rankings.


1. Indian Institute of Science Bangalore

MHRD Ranking: 1
Score: 91.81/100
Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore scored 91.81 out of 100. Jamsetji Nuseerwanji Tata, Indian Government and the Maharaja of Mysore established IISc in 1909 jointly. Jamsetji Tata wished for an institution of science, which could work for the nation’s benefit. This is 105 years old institute is one of the leading institutes in technological and scientific research and education in India. Back in 1911, IISc had just 2 departments and 21 students, and today it stands tall with 39 departments and 3,500 students.

2. Institute of Chemical Technology

Score: 87.58/ 100
ICT or Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai was founded initially as the Department of Chemical Technology in 1933 by Mumbai University with the joint support of many industries and philanthropists. ICT focus has always been on research and it has produced over 500 entrepreneurs of the first generation. ICT was famously known as UDCT. In 2002, under the UGC regulations, it was granted autonomy by the Mumbai University and then was converted to an Institute.

3. Jawaharlal Nehru University

Score: 86.45/ 100
From the early 1970s, JNU started welcoming students and teachers. With a student-teacher ratio being 1:10, JNU has always been an institute of ideas. JNU believes that students need to be taught to be able to produce their own ideas, instead of just reproducing the acquired knowledge. The university is founded on deep Nehruvian ideals and objectives. JNU has 100 acres of lush green campus, with dense forests and a paradise for birdwatchers and wildlife.

4. University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad

Score: 85.45/ 100
University if Hyderabad is a leading postgraduate research and instruction institute of the nation. The university was founded by an Act of Parliament in 1974. It was established as a Central university, and is completely funded and financed by the UGC.

5. Tezpur University, Assam

MHRD Ranking 5
Score: 84.31/ 100
Tezpur is another example of a university established by an act of the parliament in 1994. Tezpur University’s establishment was an outcome of the Assam Accord, which also brought along with it the establishment of Assam University and IIT Guwahati. Tezpur University has a campus of around 242 acres of land.

6. University of Delhi, Delhi

One of the leading universities of India, DU was established in 1922, by the Central Legislative Assembly act by then. DU is highly known for its quality of education and high standards of teaching. DU, today, stands as a leader and role model for other universities of the nation to follow and emulate. Admission to DU is known for its extremely high cut offs and talented students.

7. Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi

Score: 81.22/ 100
Banaras Hindu University received a score of 81.22 out of 100 in MHRD ranking. Banaras Hindu University, also known as BHU, is a public university in Varanasi, UP. It was founded by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya in the year 1916. BHU has a student strength of around 20,000, and is one of the largest residential universities in Asia. BHU is on the list of institutes of National Importance. BHU is an extremely diverse university comprising of students from all castes, creed, religion and gender. The university campus is of more than 1,300 acres, which is only the main campus. The south campus of the university is spread over 2,700 acres.

8. Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram

Score 78.82/ 100
IIST falls under section 3 of the UGC Act of 1956, as an Institution deemed to be a university. It is an autonomous institution functioning under the Indian Government’s Department of Space. This institution was born out of the idea and thought for quality human resources for the Indian Space Research Organisation, which is involved in the tasks of space applications and research. IIST was officially established in 2007.

9. Birla Institute of technology and Science, Pilani

MHRD Ranking 9
Score: 76.85/ 100
BITS Pilani is a recognised Institution deemed to be a university under section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. BITS Pilani was founded in the year 1964 by Mr. G.D. Birla. BITS Pilani aims at training and educating young adults in higher education of engineering. It started as a school and is now spread over several locations as the institute of higher studies, having grown from the streams of humanities to engineering.

10. Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh

MHRD Ranking 10
Score: 76.62/ 100
AMU was founded in the year 1875 by Syed Ahmed Khan, who was an eminent Muslim reformer and statesman. After the first Indian war of independence, Syed Ahmed Khan believed that Muslims need to be and must be educated and keeping this vision in his thoughts, he established the Aligarh Muslim University. AMU is UGC affiliated, and has a campus of 1,155 acres.
