In response to Hon’ble Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s call for participation for ‘Swachh Bharat Abiyan’, the programme is being carried out in full swing at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI). The Abhiyan was formally launched at JMI on September 22, 2014.

The NSS volunteers, students, teachers and staff are making efforts to get the university’s campus neat and clean and sensitizing their peer groups to assume collective responsibility for nation's cleanliness. All departments and centres of the university have launched cleanliness drive by cleaning ceiling fans, classrooms, toilets, labs, lawns, open spaces and spaces shared by the academic community, over and above the routine cleaning carried out by the sanitation department.

Under this Abhiyan, slogan writings, poster makings, film screenings, nukkad nataks, radio talks, awareness rallies, street plays, debate competitions, etc in an around the university are being organized by the teachers, students and staff in collaboration with NSS volunteers for the success of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Today, Dr. Harpreet Singh, Director, MHRD, Government of India made a visit to the Jamia campus to take stock of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. He visited Central Library, Canteens, various Departments and Centres of the university and applauded the university administration and other stakeholders for taking pro-active initiative to make the programme successful. He closely monitored the activities of the students, teachers and staff in respect of the cleanliness drive. He was extremely delighted to interact with the students and teachers and see their overwhelming response. He suggested that the university could segregate biodegradable items from the non-biodegradables and could set-up recycling units for internal consumption in collaboration with NGOs. He felt that Jamia could devise a mechanism for garbage disposal and make the campus garbage-free. Jamia is already in the process of putting systems and processes in place to make the campus environment-friendly.

Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia will be visiting several faculties of JMI on September 29, 2014 to give a fillip to the cleanliness drive. He has already been motivating students, teachers and staff to work in the direction energetically on a sustainable basis.
