Putting end to the dilemma: College or course?

Campuswalkin Expert updated on : 07 Apr, 2015 69

With the beginning of exam season, another admission crisis awaits for high schoolers. A no. of Delhi University aspirants from all over the country are going to fill forms hoping to make it into best colleges with their course of interest.

But, it is obvious that not everyone is lucky enough to get both, at the same time. For eg, an Economics hons aspirant might not get the course in SRCC but is able to get through Sri Venkateswara’s cut-off. Here comes the course or college dilemma!
The battle between Course Vs College has been on, since years, specially, in case of DU.

Who isn't fascinated by thoughts about college life? Especially when one is aspiring for DU. DU is much highly rated university, not just for it's good educational standards and placement but because of the campus life DU boasts of, the strong alumni, the charm of stories we've been hearing from all over- Hindu's virgin tree Pooja, the dancing societies, the grand university and college fests, movie shootings in campus, and of course of the pride of studying in the best university of the capital of the country. Such things will obviously make any 17 year old hungry to be part of the best college of campus. And by best, it means the most 'famous-on campus-happening' college. Let’s get practical, not every out of school child will think about career, getting settled in life and to get a job and all clichés! After all, he/she is still a juvenile.

In such situation, many students will commit the same mistake of neglecting the course of their choice only to get into a well-known college, to live a college life they've always desired. But, hey! That's where one goes wrong. You chose commerce honours over your subject of interest eco Hon, just for the sake of getting into SRCC? Even though you were getting eco Hon in a south campus college? That's a mistake mostly students make.

During the starting few months, you'll be elated, living your dreams being in your dream college, everything flimsy and fresh. But, a few months later, when you start getting use to college, you'll be facing the music. Music which you have to deal with for the at least the rest three years i.e., the course. Everything will turn upside down when you will have to study the course you didn't like and will immediately regret your choice. Neither will being in the best college will help you get through the placements, when you won't have sufficient knowledge or interest in it. Whereas, even if you are in a mediocre college, pursuing what you like, your knowledge will be acknowledged sooner or later.

And let me tell you a secret, there is nothing like happening or boring college (well, not completely). What makes the difference is the group of friends you have! And the crowd is the same everywhere. Think Hindu's fest is better than yours? You can go there too. Students from Delhi University are allowed to attend fest of any other DU college. Or maybe try make your college fests better? If north campus has Kamla Nagar, South has Satya Niketan! Your college doesn't have a drama society…You become a founder. Every college has its story, even though not famous. It's you who make the college life worthwhile, not the college!

Choosing college over course will not be very smart decision! But, of course every case is different. If you're confused regarding anything, talk to your parents, teachers, counsellors or anyone you think can help you come out of the puzzle. Clear your doubts and be prepared to face the fact that college life isn't what Karan Johar portrayed in kuch kuch hota hai! All the best to first year students!
