New Age Career Options for Engineers

Nidhi Bahl updated on : 09 May, 2020 92

With JEE and a host of other engineering entrance examinations in India announcing their results and counseling schedule, the admission season for engineering aspirants has officially kicked off.

Every year, a large number of students take these examinations to get admission in top engineering institutes. However, many of these students are unaware of the various career options that engineering as a profession offers.

Engineering as a discipline is not restricted to its fundamental branches like Civil, Electrical and Mechanical anymore. Thanks to the quick pace of technological advancement, these fundamentals have fragmented into a number of modern concepts.

We have compiled a list of some of the latest engineering careers that have a great deal of potential:

Mobile App Developer

What is it about?

A Mobile App Developer’s job involves translating software into a workable product for a mobile. The usage of services like gaming, video calls, emails, music, etc provide tremendous opportunities for mobile application developers. Application development involves writing software and programmes for handheld devices based on platforms like Android, BlackBerry, iPhone iOS etc. offered by various handset manufacturers.

How to get there?

You may obtain a B.E./B.Tech in Computer Science from a reputed college like the IITs,NITs or BITS, Pilani.

Airport Designer

What is it about?

The job an airport designer is to research, design and oversee the construction, renovation and maintenance of airports. They generally hold a civil, mechanical or structural engineering degree. Today, Airports aren’t just seen as portals between destinations anymore. They convey first impressions about places. Therefore, an airport designer’s career has become very exciting and challenging over the years. Since India lacks world-class infrastructure facilities, there is a lot of scope for development of existing as well as green airports. The need of the hour is to think globally and act locally.

How to get there?

A B.Arch with airport planning as an elective subject can help in training a person to build such specialized buildings. School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, Malviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Department of Architecture, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi are some of the institutes that could help you get there.

Leather Technologist

What is it about?

A leather technologist is involved in different stages of leather production (converting raw hides/skin into leather). Their job includes preparing, treating and finishing leather using chemical processes. A leather technologist’s other duties could include supervising operatives (workers) in the factory, researching, testing and sampling chemicals, dyes and products in the laboratory, monitoring waste and by-products to make sure that they fall within safety limits and writing research.

How to get there?

Go for a B.Tech in leather technology from a recognized institution. Anna University, Chennai provides the requisite degree. Diploma courses in leather technology, too, are available. For better career prospects, you may go for a master’s degree.

Landscape Architect

What is it about?

Landscape architecture is about designing open spaces to add aesthetic value and find the best way to use such spaces. Industrial, residential and institutional spaces, all fall under the gamut of landscape design. Services of landscape architects are used in architectural design, real estate development, site planning, town or urban planning, parks and recreation, and in historic preservation.

How to get there?

Landscape architecture is taught through diploma or degree courses in different schools of architecture throughout the country. Admission is on the basis of a test, which evaluates a candidate’s aptitude for physics, chemistry and mathematics, as well as proficiency in drawing.

Energy Conservation Specialist

What is it about?

An energy conservation specialist typically drives activities such as consolidation of energy and production-related data, examination of energy conservation opportunities, comparison with the best energy-efficiency industry practices and formulating recommendations and action plans for energy saving.

How to get there?

A B.E. or B.Tech in any discipline such as mechanical, electrical, production, instrumentation, chemical or even civil is the preferred qualification for a career in energy conservation. You can pursue your degree from IITs, NITs and other esteemed engineering institutions.

Green Architect

What is it about?

Architects design buildings – from homes to commercial to retail spaces. Architecture studies insist on efficient structural designs, climatic designs as well as understanding how to use water, light and air. After a basic course in architecture, familiarising yourself with the ‘green’ ratings will help you build structures responsibly.

How to get there?

You can go for a B. Arch programme! School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia (Faculty of Architecture and Ekistics), Delhi, Sir JJ College of Architecture, Delhi, Center for Environmental Planning and Technology University, Ahmedabad, IIT Kharagpur are some of the colleges that provide the requisite degree.

Nuclear Engineer

What is it about?

Nuclear engineering is all about the production and application of nuclear energy and the uses of radiation and radioactive materials. Most nuclear engineers design, construct and operate nuclear power plants, which generate electric power. They take care of every stage in the production of nuclear energy - from the processing of nuclear fuels to the disposal of radioactive wastes from nuclear reactors.

How to get there?

Get a B.E. or B.Tech from a recognized institute and then go for an M.Tech in nuclear science and engineering. Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mumbai, IIT, Kanpur and JNTU, Kakinada are some of the institutes that provide admissions.

Golf Course Designers

What is it about?

Golf course designers are architects as well as golfers who lend their experience to projects. Globally, there are renowned former golfers, such as Greg Norman, who design signature golf courses.

How to get there?

You can pursue a B. Arch programme from institutes such as School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi.

Petroleum Engineer

What is it about?

Petroleum engineering is concerned with exploration of hydrocarbons, reservoir studies, drilling and well completion, operations and production of oil and gas and their transportation. Petroleum engineers search the world for reservoirs containing oil and natural gas. On discovery of these resources they work with geologists and other specialists to understand the geologic formation and properties of the rock containing the reservoir, determine the drilling methods to be used, and monitor drilling and production operations. They design equipment and processes to achieve maximum and profitable recovery of oil and gas.

How to get there?

Go for a B.E. or B.Tech and then you can go for an M.Tech programme and later Ph.D. Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun and MIT, Pune are some of the institutes that can help you get there.

Air Traffic Control Officers

What is it about?

Air traffic control officers (ATCOs) guide aircraft for safe take-off, landing and en route navigation. They do so by visual observation from the ATC tower’s windows and through radar.

How to get there?

A B.E. or B.Tech in electronics, telecommunication, radio engineering, or electrical with first class. Or, a master’s in electronics or any discipline with electronics, telecom, radio physics, as specialization subjects. Clear the Airports Authority of India’s written test, followed by a voice test, personal interview and a medical examination. After which, finalists are sent for training at Civil Aviation Training College, Allahabad and in Hyderabad.

Ceramic Engineer

What is it about?

Ceramics are inorganic non-metallic materials. Ceramic engineering refers to the processing and fabrication of components / devices / machines of ceramics for technological applications.

How to get there?

Pursue a bachelor’s in ceramic engineering. A Master’s and doctorate is required for brighter career prospects. Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi and National Institute of Technology, Rourkela are some of the colleges that can provide you the requisite degrees.

Naval Architect

What is it about?

Naval architects design, develop and repair watercraft, and other structures such as hydrofoils and oil drilling platforms. They design basic structure (hull geometry), make the final design and do stability calculations, among other activities.

How to get there?

Pursue a B.Tech degree in naval architecture and ocean engineering offered at a few institutes in India, including IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur.
