While an increasing number of colleges have started offering Bachelors of Science in IT (BSc IT), Department of IT, University of Mumbai has decided to put an end to the course from the current session.

The decision comes after  a recent proposal by the Academic Council, University of Mumbai, which stated that BSc IT programme should be discontinued and more focus should be laid on other postgraduate courses offered by the University. The decision will not affect students who are currently enrolled in this course and are pursuing their second and third year of BSc IT. The programme will only be discontinued by the IT department of Mumbai University while all affiliated college will continue to offer the course.

The undergraduate course in question was introduced by the IT Department in 2001, when only 30 colleges were offering this course. Owing to the popularity of the programme among students, the student enrolment increased. 40 students were enrolled in the 2012-13 session, which then rose to 58 and 63 in the last two sessions.

The proposal to discontinue the course was laid after analyzing the current situation of the course. It is still a popular choice among students but now over 205 colleges are offering it and many new institutions are in line to get permission for starting this course. According to University officials, the university should focus more on the postgraduate courses and other career-oriented programmes.

This decision has not gone down well with the students and academicians. Student bodies like the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyathri Sena (MNVS) are agitated over the decision and they plan on approaching the Education Minister for the same.
