Indian Institutes of Technology Council have decided to conduct the JEE (Advanced) exam outside the country for the very first time. The international exam centres will include countries like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, UAE, Singapore, the Maldives and Ethiopia starting from the academic session 2020-18.

This step by IITs focuses at improvising their international standing, which also includes the number of foreign students admitted as a parameter considered by world university rankings. Now the global students would not have to travel all the way to India to take the exam anymore. However, to admit more foreign students, IITs will need to improve infrastructure and accessibility for them.

Problems to be tackled

Although the number of global students seems to increase every year in various institutes, but the constant hassles faced by these students are incorrigible. We list down some of the problems that foreign students generally face while studying in Indian institutes:-

  1. Many institutes do not provide hostels in campus or residential facilities for foreign students, which makes finging a good and reliable accommodation difficult for them.
  2. Racism is one of the core issues that constantly creep in every institute in some way or the other.
  3. Foreign countries have advanced in the way they teach by using latest technologies, while most Indian Institutes follow that the traditional pedagogy that does not suit the foreign students. They expect classrooms with technology-driven education, which isn’t a sight here too often.

Foreign students are turning up to more private or deemed universities than state universities in India, majorly because private universities are more revolutionized and follow new-age education systems.

Seeking Solutions

Universities should market themselves better in the foreign land and garner more students from there and State universities must get international accreditations to attract more students from around the world.
