Jeans Banned in Bhopal College, after Cellphones and Scarves

Hina Yadav updated on : 28 Dec, 2020 8

A renowned girls’ college in Bhopal has declared a new rule in the dress code, which is a ban on jeans and more western outfits in college premises. The ban was opposed by groups of students who felt it was a violation of their freedom.

The new rule of dress code at Sarojini Naidu Girls Post Graduate Government College (Nutan College) will come into effect from the New Year, i.e. 1st January 2020 onwards.

Mobile phones and the use of scarves to cover the face by the students, was banned by the college administration in November itself.
The only attire that the students are allowed on campus, is a salwar suit with a check- patterned jacket.

The recent order by the college authority was apparently an influence of Mr. Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya, the higher education minister. It was a result of his desire to regulate the dress codes of all the colleges in Madhya Pradesh.

The latest decision has caused anger among a lot of students and teachers.

A student of BSc final year said that, students are unable to comprehend the reason behind all the restrictions. First the administration had issues with the students’ use of mobile phones and scarves, and now they have an issue with the way they dress as well.

Vandana Agnihotri, the college principal, justified the decision saying that the students were in favour of it.

She said that the decision was made to have some sort of uniformity among the students and also, discipline on the campus. The decision was taken only after the students’ feedbacks, and the girls were in favour of this new rule.

Some of the students disagreed with the principal’s justification saying, that the administration is just using uniformity and discipline as an excuse to infringe on their freedom, which will in turn take a toll on their ability to make decisions.

“A professor said that after passing out of school, it is expected of the students to take their own decisions regarding personal choices in their college lives. It is important they do this because it helps them become an independent and self- reliant person.

The professor went on to say that, she does not believe a dress code could bring in uniformity and remove the difference between rich and poor students.

The new rule has raised questions from the traditionalists as well. Some of the married students said that the reason they took admission in Nutan College was precisely because there was no dress code and they could wear sarees.

Therefore, this rule has feared many students that they may have to discontinue their studies now.

A student raised a question asking why are all the restrictions only for girls? She added that there are 11 government colleges in Bhopal, but restrictions are imposed only on the two girls’ colleges. The BCom student questioned why was there, this discrimination when it comes to imposing restrictions on dress code?

MLB Girls College Bhopal, imposed a dress code on 1st January 2012. But, there was a section of students who were happy with the dress code. Juhi Paraste, a final year student said that they were happy with the dress code, but they don’t want it imposed on final year students.
