Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon Emerge as New Favourites in Campus Placements

Thousands of engineering and B-School graduates are looking at the e-commerce industry over sectors like FMCG, consulting, financial services, telecom and real estate for their first campus placement, according to a new survey conducted by industry body Assocham.

The survey, conducted on 500 students from various campuses including the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), BITS, ICFAI Business School and Symbiosis Institute of International Business (Pune), has revealed that E-tailors such as Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon are the new favourites among B.Tech and MBA graduates.

Over 71 per cent of respondents in the survey, conducted between September and October 2014, have an inclination towards the fast-growing e-commerce sector. In fact, they’d like to invest in this sector and become first-generation successful entrepreneurs.

With the e-commerce industry experiencing unprecedented growth, more and more pass-outs from engineering and management background are flocking to this sector for better pay package.

Assocham, in its survey, has found that companies such as Flipkart and Snapdeal are offering 20-something pass-outs salary packages between Rs. 10 lakh to 25 lakh, which is higher than the average starting salary of Rs 4-7 lakh in the private sector for fresh engineering graduates and others.

The survey also noted salaries offered by e-tailors this year are on an average 15-45 per cent higher as compared to last year.

Assocham secretary general DS Rawat says the hiring activities in the e-commerce sector are expected to grow by over 60-65 per cent and may help create between 5-8 lakh employment opportunities in the next three to five years.

The total revenue of the e-commerce industry increased over 60 times between 2010 and 2014.

Currently, around 3 million Indians work in the e-commerce sector. As a result of e-commerce operations like marketing, IT, logistics and payment services, 18 million jobs are created in these sectors.
