DU Admissions 2015: What’s new this year?

Nidhi Bahl updated on : 09 Feb, 2020 7

This year, Delhi University (DU) has a number of new things to offer to its new batch of students. Apart from changes in the admission criteria, the university is likely to offer courses such as BBS and sociology in more colleges.

DU, which is one of the few Indian universities to have featured in prominent global rankings, will also have new and renovated infrastructural facilities, including additional hostels, sports stadium, Wi-Fi networking, upgraded classrooms, teaching laboratories and e-libraries.

The university is also introducing several programmes in Arts, Commerce, Mathematical Sciences, Sciences and Applied Sciences – Bachelor of Arts (BA), BA (Vocational), BA (Hons), B.Com, B.Com (Hons), B.Sc (Mathematical Sciences), B.Sc (Hons) Mathematics, B.Sc (Hons) Statistics, B.Sc (Hons) Computer Science and B.Sc Science (Hons).

Admission Criteria

  • The existing provision sports/ECA quota (subject-wise) will be continued this time. Colleges will be free to fix the number of seats to be filled for sports (not more than 5%).
  • The enrollment process will be made uniform. In the stream-wise cut-offs, scrapped this year, the percentage for Commerce students was the highest and for Humanities students it was lowest. For example, if the cut-off for Psychology (Hons) was 89.5% to 93% earlier, it meant that 93% was for commerce students and 89% for humanities students. The cut-off for science students was somewhere in between.
  • Also, there will be no additional eligibility criterion for any category in any college or course this year. However, colleges have been allowed to give specific advantage to girl students (up to 3% only) in any course.
  • Coming to honours, if the subject applied for in the honours course is not part of the applicant’s Class 12 curriculum or he does not include it in the best of four then 2.5% marks will be deducted from his total score.

New Courses

Popular courses like Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) and Sociology will be introduced in more DU colleges in the next two years, according to a meeting of the Standing Committee of the university’s Academic Council held last week.

While BBS programme will be offered at SGTB Khalsa College, Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce and Ramanujan College, Sociology will be offered at Bharati College and Indraprastha College for Women.

History (Hons) will be introduced in Bhagini Nivedita, Ambedkar, PGDAV, Aryabhatta, and Shaheed Bhagat Singh (evening) College.
Geography (Hons) will be introduced in Indraprastha College for Women, Kalindi College and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College for Women. St Stephen’s will offer Political Science (Hons).

For the first time, B.Sc (Hons) in Forensic Science and BA (Hons) Music will be offered at Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College.

In a first of sorts, physical education as discipline course in the BA programme will be introduced at Daulat Ram College. B.Sc (Hons) in Biochemistry will also be offered at Shaheed Rajguru College of Applied Sciences for Women.

However, these courses will not be implemented immediately. It will take around two years for these courses to be introduced.
