The admissions season is around the corner, and most of the students are busy looking for options in higher education.

Every year, a large number of students apply to institutes and universities in Delhi for admission. The national capital has many colleges and universities to accommodate students from across the country. However, it will come as a shock to you that Delhi, the national capital, also has the highest number of fake school education boards and the second-highest number of fake universities in India, handing over fake degrees and certificates to hundreds of students every year.

On the official website of the National Institute of Open Schooling, an approved education board under the Union human resource development (HRD) ministry, 47 boards have been listed as fake, and out of these 21 are in Delhi.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has also published a list of 74 fake boards in its 2020 prospectus. Out of these 74 boards, 44 are in Delhi.

According to the University Grants Commission (UGC), the national capital is also home to the second-highest number of fake universities in the country. Out 22 fake universities, five are operational in Delhi.

Another disturbing fact is that the HRD ministry doesn’t keep any data on bogus boards.

“There is no central law or authority to define fake or unrecognised boards, but those boards that haven’t been recognised by state governments or the ministry of human resource development come under the category of fake board,” said advocate Ashok Aggarwal, who takes up education-related cases in the Delhi high court.

“So students passing from these boards don’t get admission in colleges and face an uncertain future.”
