Deferred Placements, IITs Up Next in following the League

The growing trend of entrepreneurship is creating an impact on the placement policies of many institutes, the addition to this list being all the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs). Now more and more students wish to ride the entrepreneurial wave and are ready to risk their campus placements to flourish their business ideas.

Following the footsteps of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), even the IITs have taken the route to providing ‘deferred placements’ to the students who prefer to take the entrepreneurial way rather than taking the placements right after passing the batch. These students have the option of sitting for the placement season of their respective a year or two later as per the institute’s policy. This provides a security cap of a job opportunity to the students just in case their business ventures do not flourish in the couple of years down the line.

This is major step taken by some of the eminent institutes of India, including the IIM’s which have been providing this flexi option of deferred placements to the students. This measure definitely promotes risk taking and entrepreneurship among the students as they know they have a backing which they can use to fall at after a year or two. Hence, they are encouraged to be liberal and innovative in their ideas when it comes to their career choices.

With the IITs participating in this trend, now there’s a chance that even IITians may start pursuing their business ventures right after graduation.

Even when the placement and job market seems to be uplifted, there is a steep rise in the number of students going to pursue their business ideas compared from the previous years. Even big brand names such as e bay and Goldman Sachs and the high pay packages offered by them, have not been able to lure the candidates to take the campus placements.

After, IIT- Bombay and IIT- Madras which have already adopted the policy of deferred placements and have granted it to atleast 10 to 12 students, IIT-Guwahati and IIT- Kanpur are also joining the league.

Considering the security provided by the deferred placements, many of these IITians are planning to start their ventures some of which are non-profit making as well.
