The students of Aditya Institute of Management Studies and Research, Mumbai (AIMSR) got an excellent opportunity to be a part of the celebrated show ‘MONEY MONEY MONEY’ on CNBC TV 18, on the occasion of its first anniversary. This was a rare event when the students got a chance to directly interact with the financial experts like Mr.Pankaj Mathpal, Managing Director of Optima Money Managers and Mr. Prakash Diwan, Director of Altamount Capital Management.

The show was hosted by Ms. Sumaira Abidi, the Associate head of the market desk with CNBC TV 18. It was a very informative session for the students as they got to decode the myths associated with investments. The experts were kind enough to solve all the queries raised by the students.

The show was telecast on Tuesday, 24th March, 2015 at 6.30 pm; Saturday,28th March, 2015 at 9.30 pm  & Sunday, 29th March at 10 am.

Mr. Pankaj Mathpal explained how important it is for one to set goals before deciding to invest. He explained the power of compounding and how important it is to think about one’s retirement planning from a very young age. He explained the difference between investing in Mutual Funds and Real Estate. Mr.Pankaj Mathpal threw light on what exactly thematic mutual funds are and when one should invest in them.

The takeaways included:

  • Thematic mutual funds means that the scheme’s objective is to invest in a particular theme.
  • When one invests in diversified mutual funds, one’s risk is diversified.
  • It makes sense to invest in thematic mutual funds only when you think a particular sector will outperform the broader market.

Note* - The most important take away from his discussion was that one must always diversify his portfolio among all the asset classes.

Mr. Prakash Diwan discussed the Do’s and Don’ts related to the stock market.

His gyan included:

  • One must never go by the tips when investing in the stock market
  • It is always advisable to have a portfolio of about 10 to 12 best stocks
  • One must invest taking into consideration the company’s fundamentals
  • As a beginner, one must start investing in Equity Mutual funds rather than direct equity

Difference between Technical Analysis and Fundamental Analysis:

Mr. Prakash Diwan explained that Technical Analysis is good for trading but Fundamental Analysis is good when investing or a long term.

Highlights:

  • Importance of saving first and then spending instead of spending money and then saving whatever remains
  • Importance of a stop loss
  • This is a difficult time to enter the equity market
  • One must enter the market according to the liquidity one has and book profits according to his goals.
  • One must exit when he or she can book profits in the most tax efficient manner.
  • One must also take into account what is happening globally before investing.
  • The most important take away was that one must never be sentimentally attached to any of his investments.
