Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines. Mechanical engineers are employed in the automotive, aerospace, chemical, computer, electronic, industrial machinery, manufacturing, mining, oceanographic, petroleum, pharmaceutical, power, printing, publishing, and textile industries. Specific technical areas include biomedical engineering, micro- and nano-technology, environmental engineering, design and manufacturing, fluid mechanics, industrial engineering, materials science, solid mechanics, systems engineering, and thermal science. Mechanical engineers typically engage in one or more of the following: research, development, design, testing, manufacturing, operation and maintenance, and marketing, sales and administration.

With an average estimated growth rate and employment opportunities of 9 – 17%, mechanical engineering is surely the most convenient option for engineers.

Another advantage of mechanical engineers is that it is a balanced an well rounded course as if you have done a B. Tech in Mechanical, you can opt for Aerospace, Automotive and any other form of specialization.

Job Prospects:

Mechanical Engineering finds applications in all fields of technology. The main job of a mechanical engineer is to make things work.   These “things” can be car engines, airplanes engines, power plants, air conditioners, lawn mowers or even exercise equipments.

Mechanical engineers can thus get employed in nearly every industry whether private or public sector, with most working for manufacturing firms and a considerable number, working in consulting services. They can get employed in government departments like

  • Defense
  • PWD
  • CPWD
  • Technical wings of armed forces
  • space research organization
  • Industries like the aeronautical, agricultural, automobile, chemical, bio-medical equipment manufacturers, energy, power, electronics, steel, oil exploration and refining, railways, etc.

Once you have a degree in mechanical engineering in hand, you can then pursue a career in any related occupation like aerospace engineer, aeronautical engineer, automotive engineer, architect, nuclear engineer, tool designer, and many other such options. Those who are interested in R&D activities can get employed with many public/private sector research organizations. Academically inclined ones can also choose teaching in technical institutions as a remunerative profession. With the rapid rate of expansion in the industrial sector, the employment potential for a mechanical engineer has become very high.
