Computer science and engineering graduates find their footing in system study, analysis, design and programming. Computer engineers design, develop and maintain software. They are engaged in analyzing problems for solutions, formulating and testing, using advanced communications or multi-media equipment or working in teams for product development.

Computer Engineers can work as a Software/ Hardware Engineer, which are the two main sectors in the computer industry. They can work as programmers, web developers and E- commerce specialists with industries that build or use computer-based systems, such as telecommunications, automotive, aerospace, petroleum, chemical and power plants etc.  They are also in demand in management consultancy organisations.

• Computer applications software engineer: They analyse the company’s needs and accordingly design, construct, and maintain general computer applications software or specialized utility programs.
• Computer systems software engineer: They coordinate the construction, maintenance, and expansion of a company's computer systems. They are responsible for coordinating each department's computer requirements.
• Computer Hardware: They cover the physical elements of a computer system, and is concerned with the design, development, assembly, manufacture and maintenance of computers

NASSCOM data reports that more and more people are buying computers and related gadgets leading to hardware revenue growth with a corresponding growth for software. The scope in this field is therefore unending. With rapid advances being made in technology, the tasks to be performed by a software engineer also keep evolving. Most of the engineers get employed in software development companies. With the explosion in e-commerce they can also seek to be employed in corporate houses, industries, public sector undertakings, public and private sector banks, financial institutions, school and colleges. After many years in the industry, one always has the choice to move into sales positions as they have in depth knowledge of the products being offered. The extensive use and dependence on the internet ensures that a career in this field is bound to be secure and rewarding.

While the salary of a Computer Engineer depends on the designation and the company he is working for, he may easily draw 3 – 6 lakhs at a junior level. As you go higher up, you may earn as much as 15 – 20 lakhs INR.
