JEE to Become the Only Entrance Exam for Engineering Admissions

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main has now become the only one entrance examination for all engineering admissions. JEE is conducted by CBSE on behalf of the HRD Ministry and the qualified students are given admissions in various engineering colleges according to their merit. JEE-Main is conducted to enroll candidates in NITs, IIITs and government funded technical institutions (GFTIs), while on the other hand, JEE-Advanced is conducted for admissions in IITs. There are around hundred entrance examinations conducted for admissions in engineering courses offered at deemed and private universities. AICTE has approved a comprehensive package, including the single national test for improving engineering education.

The HRD Ministry will scrap all the engineering entrance exams. The Centre tried to introduce ‘one nation, one entrance’ for admission to engineering colleges way back in the year 2012 but the same couldn’t be implemented. A standing committee had recommended that the JEE-Main can be replaced by Engineering Aptitude Test to eradicate all confusions and make it easier for aspirants to understand.

The AICTE, which is the statutory body and a national-level council for technical education, also directed institutes to go for induction courses, yearly revision of curriculum and teacher training through SWAYAM platform. According to sources, to implement this package, INR 250 crore would be spent.

Once implemented, the single entrance exam will do away with the practice of multiple entrance examinations conducted by central agencies, state governments and private institutions.

However, students seeking admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will have to clear the JEE-Advanced after taking the engineering entrance examination.

The aim of taking this step is to make the system and process more transparent, standardized and free of corruption and commercialization. India has more than 3300 approved engineering colleges affiliated to universities, with an annual intake of an approximate 1.6 million students. However, half of the seats are filled.

This proposal was similar to that of National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) that was administered for all medical and dental admissions. NEET was conducted in 2013, then was taken back and re-implemented again in 2020. The untimely change of opinions and decisions created confusions, leaving students in the middle of nowhere.
